Surviving Halloween

It's that time of year! The time when ALL the Halloween candy comes out to play. Sure, you tell yourself "it's for the kids!", but then before you know it you're hand has hit the bottom of the bag and you're kid is asking what happened to all their candy.

Here are some tried and true tips and tricks to help you resist the urge to completely devour that entire back of Reese Peanut Butter cups... again.

1. Hold Off On Buying Candy

I know you're tempted to grab that bag of candy now while you're in Target, but hold off. The longer that it's in your house - the more likely you are to snatch a couple of pieces throughout the day.

Buy candy for trick-or-treaters as close to Halloween night as you can. This will save you money in the long run too.

2. Buy Less Candy, Give Out More

And while you’re at the store, “buy less than you think you will need,” advises Ann Marion Willis, an R.D. in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. “This will help you avoid having leftovers hanging around the house. It’s better for you to run out of treats than to be left eating them yourself.”

3. Buy the Stuff You Like the Least

I know it's so tempting to buy those Twix bars that you love, but I'm telling you - this will only make the temptation so much!

4. Eat Well

Sugar cravings come on at their strongest when your stomach is empty and your blood sugar drops to somewhere in your toes! Eat protein and fiber-rich meals through the week to make resisting those little mini bars even easier. I love to drink my Shakeology which has 16g of protein and 6g of fiber! And bonus I have recipes that make it tastes like that candy bar I'm eying! Haven't tried Shakeology? I'd love to chat with you about it!

5. Keep Your Mouth Minty Fresh

Brushing your teeth is a great way to deter the urge to dive head first into that candy bowl!

6. Get Rid of It

I don't mean through it away - although that is an option if you need it! Some dentists now offer to buy candy off kids in exchange for cash. This way they get a little spending money and you’ll get that sugary temptation out of your house and mind! Or you can donate it to Operation Gratitude! Operation Gratitude sends care packages to U.S. troops stationed overseas and first responders stateside.

Remember this is just one day of the year. Don't let it derail all of your hard work!
